Keep Moving Forward: Daily TBI Digest
Sunday, June 7, 2026
Good morning, friends. Pour the coffee, take the breath, and let's talk. Today's headlines are loud about one quiet word: consciousness: the idea that the door isn't shut just because somebody told you it was. I lived almost a full 30 days where nobody could promise what would remain. So, when the science starts saying "later than we thought" out loud, I lean in close.
What's Moving the Needle
Researchers at Stanford, with work published in Nature, are showing that deep brain stimulation aimed at the thalamus can wake up consciousness and cognition even years after a severe injury. Years. A separate Stony Brook study is mapping how awareness actually can get back online. Read that again if you're a caregiver who's been told "this is as good as it gets." That sentence has an expiration date now. Recovery isn't a window that slams shut at six months or two years! Recovery is a road, and the road keeps going.
Recovery & Treatment
Beyond the stimulation work, there's real, usable progress. New deep-learning tools pair a CT scan with a synthetic MRI to predict outcomes better than CT alone, meaning your team gets a clearer map sooner. A targeted cooling collar (the CB240 Aurora) is being tested to bring down swelling without freezing the whole body. Stem cells nudged by gentle electromagnetic stimulation rebuilt tissue and behavior in 28 days in early models. None of it is a magic wand. All of it is another inch. Inch by inch is how I got back.
Disability & Policy
The VA is in the middle of its biggest disability-rating overhaul in decades, and it's messy. A medication rule rolled out in February and got pulled in ten days after veterans, the Legion, the VFW, and the DAV said no. That's not chaos, its strong people refusing to be steamrolled, and winning. Meanwhile the ADA still has your back at work if you're living with TBI or PTSD. The system is hard. It is not hopeless. We keep showing up, and we keep it honest.
Keep Moving Forward
The survivors carried this week. Synapse and Headway keep putting real recovery stories in front of the world, and one of them got described by "the will to keep moving forward." That's not just my slogan. That's just what survivors do. My recovery is everyone's recovery: every doctor, every caregiver, every stranger who made me a PB&J when I couldn't hold a knife is in this fight with us. Showing up consistently. That's the whole thing.
Sports & Veterans
The CTE picture got sharper and heavier. New research says it's the cumulative force of head impacts (not just the count of concussions) that drives the disease, with every 1,000 extra hits raising the odds 21%. Now an MRI scan can spot a leaky blood-brain barrier as an early warning in living patients. NFL concussions dropped 17% this year, which I'll take, but with NCAA reform still lagging, the fight for these athletes and our veterans is far from done.
Mental Health
This one I hold gently. Depression after a brain injury is common. Please hear that, because it can feel like a personal failure when it is nothing of the kind. It's treatable, and the evidence says counseling plus medication together works best. Caregivers, the research finally sees you: your exhaustion is real and it matters. You don't have to white-knuckle this alone. If today is one of the heavy ones, you can call or text 988 right now. Reaching out is forward motion too.
Trending
Jamie MoCrazy's TBI documentary keeps spreading, dragging "family in the room" care into the mainstream where it belongs. Survivor-built podcasts like Experiencing My Brain, Post Concussion are climbing the 2026 charts. By survivors, for survivors. That's the good stuff.

Today's Thought
A team of scientists just proved that "too late" was a guess, not a verdict. That's the whole story of this life, isn't it? Somebody draws a line and calls it the end, and then you take one more step past it, and then another. You don't have to feel strong today. You just have to keep going forward. I'm right here with you.
Keep Moving Forward.
